Keep a question in the margin.

Who is responsible?

Find the person behind the word physician

Ask who makes decisions, who sees you and who replies later.

Turn a label into named roles

  • Who will assess my concern?
  • Who will decide whether a prescription is appropriate?
  • What does the physician do in my own care?
  • Who can answer questions after the visit?

Clinician means the health professional assessing or treating you. Ask for that person’s role in ordinary words.

If several people are involved, draw a short list of names beside their tasks. Ask which person owns the next step.

Ask how the conversation works

  • Can I ask the prescriber my own questions before agreeing?
  • How can I clarify an answer I do not understand?
  • If the first person cannot answer, who will?

The Federation of State Medical Boards writes advice for the boards responsible for licensing doctors. Its guidance checked September 26, 2026 calls for a way for you to ask more questions.

The group advises those boards; it does not issue a national doctor’s licence.

Check the record rather than the title

  • Ask for the doctor’s full name as it appears on the licence.
  • Ask which state board holds the relevant record.

Look in the state medical board’s public files for licence status and any disciplinary action it publishes.

An absence of public action is not a rating of the doctor’s skill.
