What happens in care?
Put the care conversation in order
Prepare for an assessment without choosing the outcome in advance.
Before the conversation
- Describe the concern you want help with and the change you hope for.
- Make a list of your medicines, supplements and questions.
- Ask what records the person treating you wants to review.
- Ask what the visit costs if it ends without a prescription.
A short note is enough to get started. Use the words you already have. You can ask for unfamiliar words to be explained.
During the assessment
- Ask what the person treating you thinks is causing the concern and what remains uncertain.
- Ask what choices belong in the discussion, including waiting.
- Ask what a test or an in-person exam would add.
For a needed test or examination, the Federation of State Medical Boards says to provide it, arrange it or direct the patient to another service.
This is advice for state medical boards about proper care. Each state sets its own testing rules.
Before the conversation ends
- Request a written account of the proposed product, purpose and follow-up.
- Ask whom to contact if the instructions are unclear.
- Ask what the next review is meant to cover and when it will happen.
- Leave with the full price and the cancellation terms in writing.
